Beta1 gets laggier with time, cause of a lot of memory leaks, thus forcing people to refresh the browser to get rid of client lag.
So, beta2 was a complete rewrite with performance in mind. We decided to ditch our current framework – FlashPunk in favor of Starling.
Starling is a cool game engine, it uses GPU to render the content, in the end game was performing well, but not on older computers, thus making it laggy. So the performance beta2 was focused on – was missing.
It was a disaster so we rolled back to beta1 and started a second rewrite, this time using FlashPunk. It won’t take so long, cause this time we’ll reuse some code.
We had some issues with beta2, so we rolled back to beta1 until we fix those issues.
As I previously wrote, beta 2 wasn’t focused on new features, and it is called beta 2 because it was rewritten from scratch. The main change is the performance, memory leaks are solved now. Some of the beta1 features aren’t finished in beta2 yet, but don’t worry, Squarelaxy will get small updated daily, so soon it will have all the old features back, plus a lot of new features. Here are some changes in beta 2
- Trampoline mechanic changed: it now depends on your fall velocity.
- Trampoline has an animation now.
- Background queueing ( queue for a race and while you wait you can customize your character, browse things and have a chat in our future lobby )
- Successive kills time increased up to 5 seconds (from 3)
- Easier getting out of liquids and climbables
- Some new apparel
- New blocks
- Bugs, a lot of them
A few months ago we thought of abandoning the development of squarelaxy. Yet userbase was slowly growing, thanks to Pokki. Active users motivated us to continue development but we didn’t want to touch current source code, it is full of memory leaks, bugs and stuff. We started from scratch, 100% from scratch. We are rewriting Squarelaxy and beta 2 will be released then we’ll reach same features as in current version. After beta 2 we’ll start adding new features and stuff.
The game is somewhere half way through the rewrite process.
Don’t expect big visual changes in initial beta 2 release, expect performance improvements, this fall.
So we have a blog now. We’ll be posting updates on Squarelaxy and stuff.
